The Spurger Pirate baseball team travelled to High Island for a double header to finish regular season play on April 29. Christian Russell pitched the first game of the night.
The Pirates took an early lead, and in the third, rapidly added runs to the board. Billy Williams, Samuel Sirmons, Tyler Dozier, Dalton Holley, and Christian Russell all scored for the Pirates. With Williams at bat, Gantt Stone, Jacob McFarland, and Bryce Oseguera had the bases loaded. Williams hit the ball to the outfield which allowed his teammates to score. He then ran to third from an overthrown ball. After Dozier got a base hit, Williams scored and the third was over 10-1. Russell continued to have a solid performance on the mound for the Pirates throughout the remainder of the game. At the end of the first game, the Pirates claimed their first win of the night 14-2.
The Pirates began their final game of the night with Tyler Dozier pitching and Russell as catcher. A runner attempted to steal second, but Russell threw to Trey Cormicle on second for the quick out.
Cormicle scored off a loose ball after stealing both second and third. Holley got a base hit to first and Sirmons scored. Russell hit the ball deep in the outfield and made it around to second and Holley scored. While Stone was at bat, Russell scored and then Stone was walked. Later, Stone stole third and then made it home. Holley had a base hit in the third inning and then stole third base. Dayson Robertson was walked in the fourth and then later stole and slid into third before he made it home. Holley had a base hit to second which brought Cormicle, Sirmons, and Dozier across home plate. Tyler Dozier pitched well and added another winning game for the Pirates. The team played with a sense of camaraderie throughout the entire game and truly showed their love of the game. The game ended with their second win for the night 9-1 and the title of 1A District Champs.
The first round of playoffs was postponed because of rain, so that meant the race was on to find an available field. After the search was over, the game was set for the Nutrabolt Stadium in Bryan.
They played Richards on Saturday, May 4 at 9:30 pm. Many area teams were also looking for dry fields, so this was their scheduled time in the line-up. The Pirates fought for the chance to advance but struggled to add runs to the board. In the seventh inning, Zayne Ogrodowicz was walked to first. Trey Cormicle was next up and hit the ball deep to centerfield.
Ogrodowicz was able to run and score with Cormicle on his heals to score also. After one more at bat, the game ended 2-8. The season may have come to an end, but the friendships and memories made will last forever. Thanks for a great season Pirates.
