The 1A Regional golf tournament was held April 22-23 in Pflugerville. The boys’ team played a good round of golf, and senior Tyler Dozier placed 5th overall in the tournament. The first year Lady Pirate golf team did not place but played well and are looking forward to next year.
The stands were packed on April 26 as parents, friends, and Pirate fans anxiously awaited the last home game of the year for the Spurger Pirate baseball team. They faced off against Big Sandy JV in what was also Senior Night.
The game started off with a quick play by seniors Dalton Holley and Jacob McFarland. A runner attempted to steal second, but Holley ran and threw the ball to McFarland who tagged the runner out. Samuel Sirmons (Sr) had a base hit to first and then preceded to steal second. Tyler Dozier (Sr) followed with a hit and run to third which allowed Sirmons to score. Dozier then added his own to the board as he slid into home. Gantt Stone (Sr) had a solid hit which landed him on first.
With Holley on third and Stone on second, Christian Russell was next up to bat. Russell had a hit to the outfield which enabled him to run to third and brought Holley and Stone across the plate to score. The ball then got loose from the catcher, and Russell ran from third to bring the game to 5-0.
They continued this forward momentum throughout the game with steals, runs, solid hits, and teamwork. The game ended with a win for the Pirates 12-1. The team celebrated and recognized the seniors following the win. Seniors (Trey Cormicle, Tyler Dozier, Dalton Holley, Jacob McFarland, Samuel Sirmons and Gantt Stone), teammates, and Coaches Aaron Newcomb and Josh Toney, all contributed to a memorable season at home and away. They played at High Island in a double header on April 29 to finish regular season play before play-offs begin.
