by Michael Patrick

Varsity Baseball
While school was out last week for Tyler County schools, the Colmesneil Bulldog baseball team was starting their season. The varsity Bulldogs started their season by competing in the very competitive Groveton tournament held February 20–22.

Colmesneil opened the tournament up against Cleveland and Warren on Thursday. The Bulldogs who are transitioning from a play-off basketball season into baseball mode had a tough go the first day of the tournament dropping their game against Cleveland 10-5 and then dropping their second game of the day against Warren 8-1.

On Friday, the Bulldogs took on Leon and Latexo. Friday went much better for the Bulldogs. Colmesneil opened up the day by playing a tough Leon team. In a very tight game, the Bulldogs prevailed 4-3. Reigning District MVP Dylan Falcon picked up where he left off last season smacking two key doubles. Chris Carr picked up the victory after pitching a solid game. Matt Bailey came in and shut the door on Leon to pick up the save.
The second game of the day was against Latexo. The Bulldogs jumped all over the Tigers from the first pitch as they defeated Latexo 15-0. The Bulldogs got an extremely solid pitching effort from Jake Pattillo as he held the Latexo bats in check on his way to pitching the first no-hitter of the season for the Bulldogs.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs took on a very talented squad from Groveton. This game did not disappoint as neither team could take complete control of the game. The Bulldogs fought hard and came out on top in a dog fight 7-6. Cody Walsh had two key hits and scored two runs for Colmesneil. Tyler Walker took one yard for his first homerun of the season. Cole Johnson had a solid outing on his way to picking up the win. And Bailey picked up his second save of the young season by quieting the Groveton bats to seal the win.

Up next for Colmesneil is the Evadale Tournament to be held February 27–March 1.

JV Baseball
The Colmesneil JV baseball team traveled to Douglass to compete in the Douglass tournament. The young Bulldogs fought hard going 1-2 in the tournament. The Bulldogs did pick up a convincing win over Trinity 10-3.

Varsity Softball
The Lady Dogs softball season is under full swing as well as they started playing games this past week. Colmesneil started the season off facing Cushing this past Tuesday for their home opener. This was a tight game for the first three innings as both teams struggled to get anything going against their opponent's pitcher. Colmesneil finally broke through with some key hits, with Kara Standley leading the way with a double and single. Merrick Graham chalked up two singles during the game also. Standley was able to keep the Cushing bats from getting hot as she fanned eight of their batters for the game. Colmesneil shut out Cushing 4-0 with Standley getting the win and the shutout.

The Lady Dogs then traveled to Jasper to compete in the Jasper softball tournament February 20 –22. The Lady Dogs continued their hot play throughout the tournament as they amassed a 5-1 tournament record to push their season record to 6-1.

The Lady Dogs opened the tournament by crushing West Hardin 15-0. Colmesneil had their way on the base paths as several of the Lady Dogs managed to steal multiple bases on the Lady Oiler defense. Treasure Jackson and Magen Allen both led the way with four stolen bases apiece. Krista Harris stole three bases and Kim Knighten also stole one base. Standley picked up the win in this game as well. Colmesneil also defeated Burkeville by a score of 9-0 on day one of the tournament.

On Friday, the Lady Dogs took on a tough Bridge City team and came up short dropping the game 6-1. But the Lady Dogs made a complete 180 turnaround in their second game of the day, by dismantling Buna 7-1. The bats were rolling in this afternoon match-up as Standley smashed a triple and McKenzie Rogers crushed a double for the Lady Dogs.

To finish up the tournament on Saturday, Colmesneil took on Port Arthur Memorial and had another solid outing as they defeated Memorial 9-2. To finish up the tournament the Lad Dogs took on Beaumont Ozen. Allen got the bats going in this one as she absolutely crushed a ball over dead centerfield for a two run homerun, her first on the season. The Lady Dogs went on to win the game 7-0.

The Lady Dogs continue this week by competing in the Woodville tournament on Thursday and Saturday. They also open up district play by taking on Big Sandy on Friday, February 28.
