On October 9, the Spurger cross country team junior high girls and boys and varsity girls and boys competed at West Sabine. There were several other larger schools that the Pirates had to face, and they still came away with four top ten medals.
The Lady Pirates varsity team consisted of three girls, Katelynn Loechel, Jamie Shumake, and Vivian Zoch, two of whom just joined the team with only one practice. In their race, there were a total of 37 girls running. Vivian Zoch finished 20th, Jamie Shumake finished 26th, and Katelynn Loechel placed 28th.
The varsity boys team consisted of seven boys competing against 45 others. Dave Pilgreen placed 4th, Cory Hyden took 11th, Caleb Winkle placed 20th, Jentry Jordan placed 30th, Christian Laurent was 31st, Coltyn Simon was 34th, and Nathan Sheffield finished 39th.
The junior high girls team competed in the largest race of the day of 55 girls. The team of six girls did very well. Desiree Hallo took 2nd place, Justine Loechel placed 33rd, and right behind her was Bailey Bowers with 34th. Next was Shelly Martin who placed 40th, then Kaleigh Eason finished 43rd, and Tabitha Martin finished 44th.
Last were the junior high boys with the largest of Spurger's teams with ten competitors. Of the 35 others who raced against them, Chase Shook took 7th place and was followed by Gantt Stone in 10th place. Gage Winkle placed 20th, Christian Kitaura placed 21st, Jeff Laurent placed 22nd, and Chance Shook placed 23rd. Not far behind was Jacob McFarland in 27th, Kyle Mott in 30th, Hunter Jenkins in 32nd, and Tucker Freeman in 34th.
The cross country team will be competing in their district meet in Chester on October 23.
The varsity volleyball team will be wrapping up their season with only two games left. In October, they will be playing in San Augustine and October 22 they will be in Goodrich. Both games will begin at 4:30 p.m. so be sure to go support the Lady Pirates.
