Spurger Pirates faced a few tough losses through the past week. The junior high volleyball faced Colmesneil on September 16. Although they lost, the girls made the Bulldogs work for the win, when they sent the game to three matches. Players Tabitha Martin, Desiree Hallo, and Shelly Martin, as well as many others, had good serves and passes to keep them in the game. The junior high girls are 1-1 for their district record and can use support throughout the rest of their season. They will be playing again September 28 in the Warren junior high tournament as well as September 30 in Spurger against Chester at 4:30 p.m.
The vasristy Lady Pirates also had a tough week against Chester and Apple Springs. The scores did not reflect it, but the Pirates played hard and are continuing to progress positively. Ashley Mock, Haley Hiatt, Natalie Zornoza and Karley Wood have become tough opponents with the hitting skills they have developed. Courtney Crain has stepped up as the new setter. Shania Peavey has come to be a reliable libero as a sophomore, and has been very successful with it. Mattie and Lila Fortenberry are working hard on the back row with good digs and passes, as well. Jamie Shumake has helped as a good all around player for the team, as a sophomore. Freshmen Cassidy LeBeouf and Capri Ford have stepped up for the varsity team as well providing smart tips and serves. The Lady Pirates are continuing to grow and need positive support in the games to come. They will play September 27 against Goodrich and October 1 against Burkeville. Both games will be held in Spurger at 4:30 p.m.
The cross country team will have a meet in Zavalla on September 28.
