Spurger Pirates prepare for a great year

Spurger Lady Pirates varsity volleyball team.By: Kelsey Sheffield

The Spurger Pirates have begun to compete in different areas of their athletic program the past few weeks. Through all the practices and games shown, they seem to be on their way for a successful year this year.

The junior high Lady Pirates volleyball played their first district game versus Burkeville. The girls showed a lot of young talent and heart when they beat the Mustangs. They will be playing in Spurger on Sept. 23 against Burkeville.

The varsity Lady Pirates volleyball played Colmesneil on Sept. 10 and Sabine Pass on Sept. 13. With a slow start during the games, their opponents made it difficult and too late for the Lady Pirates to come back. Although their record has not yet reflected it, they have continued to grow and improve as a team. Their next games will both be in Spurger at 4:30 p.m. ,September 20. They will be facing Apple Springs. On September 24 they will play San Augustine.

Spurger's cross country team has been practicing since the second week of school, and had their first practice meet, Saturday, September 14 in Jasper. There were several 2A, 3A, and 4A schools for 1A Spurger to compete with, but they still gave their best in hopes to continue to improve. The varsity boy's race consisted of about 80 runners. Spurger's Corey Hyden placed in the top 40. Nathan Sheffield and Jentry Jordan placed in the top 60. The team will be competing again September 28 in Zavalla.

Spurger will be hosting a fundraiser rag ball tournament for their program Saturday September 21. It will be held at the SHS baseball and softball fields.
