Spurger volleyball begins

Capri Ford serves the ball.by Kelsey Sheffield

After a first, long week of practice, the Lady Pirates had their first scrimmage of the season on Friday, August 9 against the Newton Eagles. The very young Lady Pirates played hard through the soreness of the previous week, as well as the struggle of rebuilding a new team. Spurger started off the first match a little slow being down 16-6 when Ashley Mock made a kill to the deep back on the Lady Eagles which gave the Lady Pirate's Capri Ford the serve to keep giving Spurger a slight catch up to 10-16 until Newton called a timeout to break her streak. Both teams then continued to go back and forth with the point until Newton took the first match with the score of 25-23. Once again the Pirates were lagging in the start of the match, but Courtney Crain, came out with strong serves to catch the Lady Pirates up to within two, before losing the serve back to the Lady Eagles. The second match was again given to Newton at 25-21. Although Spurger was down by two sets, they still came out strong with Cassidy Lebouf serving giving the Lady Pirates a 4-0 lead. Newton then jumped back up to tie the score until Spurger took back the serve and Ashley Mock served another four serves in a row giving the Pirates a lead of 8-4. Both teams fought hard and kept the score neck and neck for the rest of the game, but unfortunately for Spurger, Newton took the game 25-17, beating Spurger 3-0. You can look for the Spurger Lady Pirates to be playing in the Evadale tournament Thursday, August 15 through Saturday, August17.
