Warren man electrocuted during wire theft

by Emily Waldrep

A Warren man found out Tuesday that stealing copper wire is not only illegal, it can be deadly.

The body of a man found dead on Pineville Road near the Tyler County line has been identified as John Adam Cleveland, age 31, of Warren. The body was found on the morning of Tuesday, May 28 at approximately 9 a.m. lying in the road near a running pickup truck.

Investigators say that Cleveland had been electrocuted while trying to steal copper wire from a nearby electrical pole. According to investigators, the wire on the pole had been cut recently, a good indicator that Cleveland was in the process of stealing the expensive copper wiring.

"Cleveland was probably in the back of his truck when he was electrocuted," said Hardin County Sheriff Ed Cain. "He fell from the back of the truck and his body landed behind it while it was still running."

Medical examiners say the preliminary cause of death is electrocution.

Anyone with any information about what happened should contact the Hardin County Sheriff's office at 246-5100.
