WOODVILLE – An attempt to steal an ATM machine in Woodville ended in Polk County last Wednesday and resulted in the arrest of a Houston man.

A call came in to Tyler County Sheriff’s Office dispatch in the early morning hours reporting of an incident at the First National Bank, located at the corner of US Highway 190 East and FM 1746. Before deputies arrived on the scene at approximately 5:45 a.m., according to Sheriff Bryan Weatherford, three suspects had attempted to steal the bank’s ATM machine and left, heading west toward Livingston. A vehicle matching the description of the getaway vehicle was located travelling westward on 190 and seen near Hennigan Park.

Weatherford said that once TCSO deputies spotted the vehicle and activated their lights, a pursuit began, and continued into Polk County, with speeds exceeding 100 mph at times.

Polk County deputies set up tire deflation devices near Indian Springs, where the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Two male subjects exited the vehicle and fled, on foot, through a fence line. TCSO deputies and officers with the Alabama-Coushatta Police Department began to pursue the pair on foot but were unable to take them into custody.

One suspect remained inside the vehicle and was taken into custody. He was identified as Aaron Lakeffe Rubins, a 30-year-old Houston man. He was transported to Tyler County Jail, where he later bonded out. He is charged with attempted theft of property, <$300K ATM and engaging in organized criminal activity. His bonds were set at a combined $30K for the two charges.

The wrecked getaway vehicle was impounded by TCSO to be processed for evidence, and the other two suspects are still at-large. Weatherford said there are currently no descriptions or footage of the other suspects, but TCSO is handling the investigation.
