Colmesneil Board hears reports

Colmesneil School Board held their regular meeting for the business month of May at 7 p.m. on June 3. The Board began the meeting by approving the minutes from the April meeting, and the financial statements and bills for the month of April.

Several items were approved by the Board, including a motion to approve the 2013-2014 school calendar, and a motion to approve the instructional materials allotment and TEKS certification. A motion to approve the Student Athletics and Activities insurance which will cover all students in grades K-12 during all their school activities was discussed, with the Board confirming that the District is not responsible for any paperwork and that it is the parents' responsibility to take the necessary steps after being notified that their child has been hurt. Following discussion, the motion was approved. A motion to approve 1:1 Student Device Insurance which will cover the Chromebooks given to students in grades 7-12 was presented, with the Board discussing holding a parent meeting to answer any questions and to provide information to parents. The motion to approve 1:1 Student Device Insurance was passed.

Superintendent Stacy Ackley presented his report to the Board, saying that the stadium construction should be completed in another two weeks, the school marquee should be arriving in three weeks, and the painting of the old gym is scheduled to begin on July 1. Mr. Ackley reported that the tables and blowup additions to Lake Tejas seem to be receiving positive reactions, and that a playground for smaller children to provide a safe place out of the water will hopefully be built this summer.

High School Principal Walter McAlpin presented his report to the Board, saying that the High School has had a great spring in all areas, winning District in baseball, softball, One-Act Play, and Junior High and High School boys and girls track. Academically, a total of $509,910 in scholarships has been offered to graduating seniors.

After adjourning an executive session, the Board voted to approve the resignations of Jerry Cummins, Susie Banker, and Maria Wilcox. The Board then approved a motion to employ Alejandro Tapia and Catherine Grimlich.
