Chester Board wraps up year May 20

By: Jessi Sanders

The Chester School Board held their regular monthly meeting on May 20 at 6 p.m. The minutes of the previous meeting and the financial statements were both approved. Several additional items were approved, including a motion to approve student insurance coverage for 2013-2014, a motion to hold the regular June meeting on June 17 at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Superintendent's evaluation, and a motion to approve the authority of the Administrative Secretary/Business Manager to be on the Texas State Bank activity account signature card, and any other document deemed necessary by the Chester ISD Superintendent. At the recommendation of Superintendent Ivey, a motion to approve changes to the 2013-2014 school calendar was tabled until after executive session.

Superintendent Wayne Ivey presented his report to the Board, discussing end of the year issues. Enrollment is currently up to 176 students, attendance is up, and discipline referrals are going down. The athletic banquet went very well, with students expressing their appreciation and enjoyment of the experience. Two FFA students were recognized at the Area FFA Convention. All seniors have been accepted to colleges or trade schools, and several have received scholarships. 100% of students passed all of their TAKS tests. Mr. Ivey discussed the improvement of Board, community, and staff communication; bringing up the events such as banquets and open houses to encourage participation. The Summer Workshop for teachers will be held August 13-15 and will be addressing technology.

After executive session, the Board took the motion to approve changes to the 2013-2014 School Calendar from the table and approved it. The meeting was adjourned.
