County students participate in STEM day

Seven Tyler County Students participated in SFA's STEM day.by Emily Waldrep

Seven Tyler County students and four teachers recently got the chance to travel to Stephen F. Austin University in Nacadoches to participate in a widely know science and technology event called STEM day.

The students got to listen to keynote speaker Dr. Doug Frantz discuss adult stem cell research that he is working on as well as other keynote speakers that gave presentations on mars exploration, chemical collision, and magical numbers. The students also watched a physics magic show, and participated in various science labs. In one lab, students programmed a robot to travel through a maze and in another the kids got to make stalactites.

In addition to the fun things they got to do, the students also had a chance to think about their future as Byron Walker, Pat Oates, Scott Thompson, Gregory McClain and Kristi Owens spoke about the science, math, technology and engineering fields and how they can relate to certain job fields and future careers.

The students and teachers had a great time at STEM day, and thank Stephen F. Austin University for hosting such a wonderful event.
