The Spurger Lady Pirate basketball team officially ended their season after facing the Douglas Indians during the 2012-2013 playoff brackets. The girls had fought hard throughout their district season, and were able to advance to play-offs, just as their coach and fans had predicted. The first district playoff game was held on February 11 at 6:00p.m at Zavalla High School gymnasium.
From the second that the game began, fans and players could tell that it would be an intense battle between the Pirates and the Indians. After tip-off, Douglas was able to snag the ball and hit a two point shot, giving them the lead after only a few minutes of game time. But, the Pirates held a strong defense throughout the entire first quarter and Douglas fought to get a shot in for the remainder of the first. The Pirates played an excellent defense, but their offense struggled to make it to the basket and successfully sink their shots. Douglas had a very aggressive defensive line, and reclaimed every single one of the Pirates missed shots. The Pirates weren't able to score in the first quarter, but Spurger's defense only allowed Douglas three baskets. The first quarter ended with a score of 0-6, with the Douglas Indians
in the lead.
The second quarter began with the Pirates ready to claim a win. Nakona Cravy hit a 3-point shot within seconds of the starting buzzer that brought the crowd to their feet. But, Douglas responded with a lay-up of their own within seconds of the Pirates victory. But, Douglas's defense finally had to pay for some of their aggressive moves, and Kelsey Sheffield was able to step up to the free-throw line and sink
two shots, bringing the score to 5-8 with Douglas still in the lead. Douglas came back with two and three point shots of their own, bringing the score to 5-13. Point guard Kelsey Sheffield struggled to get past the Indians defense, and was able to score a basket with four
minutes left in the quarter, and Cravy helped out by hitting a basket of her own with only two minutes left in the quarter, but it was no match for the Indians, who brought the score up to 9-23 with Douglas
in the lead.
After halftime, both teams were fired up and no points were made until there were only four minutes left in the third quarter. Douglas sank two back-to-back baskets, bringing the score to 9-27, but Sheffield
responded with a 2-point layup, closing the gap by two points. Douglas hit another basket with one minute left in the quarter. The score at the end of the third quarter was 15-31 with Douglas in the
lead.
The fourth quarter was a bust for both teams and neither the Pirates or the Indians were able to score any points. Cravy made one last effort to close the score gap, and hit a perfect 2-point shot at the buzzer at the end of the game. Douglas still pulled off the win
with a score of 17-31. Although the Pirates didn't advance, they had a successful season and went farther than several critics said that they
would. They are now looking forward to next years basketball season, and the start of their successful softball season.
