CHESTER—The Chester football team faced long-time foe High Island on Friday, Sept. 28. Playing conditions were not ideal. The field was saturated with water from all the recent rains and swarms of mosquitos attacked both players and fans throughout the evening. Despite losing to the Cardinals 0-50, the Jackets put forth good effort. Coach Jeremy Wooten said that many players were in positions they never have played before due to injuries. Jake Pitre ran the ball well on offense. J.T. Martin, Jared Young, and Austin Jerkins played well on defense for the Jackets. Wooten said overall the team is improving and the freshmen are learning on the job.
The Jackets have an extra week to regroup and hopefully get everyone healthy before facing off against Sanchez Charter School on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Chester’s “Big Homecoming” is next week. The entire week will gear toward getting ready for the big game on Saturday, and the entire student body is encouraged to dress up each day. The parade begins at 10 a.m., followed by a CHS Alumni business meeting and pep rally in J.P. Johnson Gymnasium. The junior class will have a barbecue dinner in the cafeteria from noon until 2 p.m. The library will be open for visitation until 4:30 p.m., when the activities move down to Aubry Bradley Football Stadium. The Queen’s Coronation will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. football game. The Little Cheerleaders will perform during halftime.
Lady Jackets sweep Goodrich
The Chester Lady Jacket volleyball team wrapped up the first round of district play last Friday night with a sweep over the Goodrich Lady Hornets. Chester won the game easily with scores of 25-12; 25-16; 25-5, bringing their district record to 4-1. The Lady Jackets were led in serving by Taylor Handley. The Jackets were tied up in game two when Handley served for eleven points straight, digging the Jackets out of a hole. Freshman Trinity Jerkins and Jasmine Mitchell also served well. Assistant Coach Becki Byrd, who is stepping up to coach while Head Coach Megan Nichols is on maternity leave, said that the team has spent a lot of time working on serving in practice, and it is paying off.
The Lady Jackets will travel to Colmesneil on Saturday, Oct. 6 to face the Lady Bulldogs for the second time this season. Varsity will get started at 10:30 a.m., with the junior varsity game to follow.
On Tuesday, Oct. 9, the Lady Jacket varsity volleyball team will travel to Kennard to meet up with the Lady Tigers. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

Weather foils cross-country efforts again
The Chester cross country teams had yet another hiccup in their cross-country schedule. Zavalla was forced to cancel their cross country meet due to the weather, leaving the team without a meet for the week.
The district cross country meet will be held on Thursday, October 11 in Lufkin. Goodrich and Spurger are the other two teams competing against Chester in the district meet. The high school runners are all vying for the chance to run at the Region IV Cross Country Meet in Corpus Christi on Oct. 22.
