Jacket Basketball Teams Fall Short to Pirates

by Jana Rayburn

The Chester basketball teams had only one game this week, due to Thanksgiving holidays. The JV boys, varsity girls, and varsity boys all traveled to Deweyville to take on the Pirates on Tuesday, November 22.

The JV boys came up short against Deweyville, losing 16-32. Michael Castleberry led the Jackets with four buckets before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Junior Henson finished the game with four points, J.T. Martin scored three points, and Jake Pitre scored a free throw. Bailey Goins played hard for the Jackets.

The JV boys are getting better with every game and practice, and coaches Cory Hines and DeWayne Armstrong expect even more progress by the time district play begins.

The Lady Jackets were no match for the Lady Pirates. The Lady Jackets lost 15-51. Turnovers and missed shots riddled the Lady Jackets all through the game. The team had an especially rough first half, scoring only four points to Deweyville's 21 points.

The second half was a lot better for the young Jacket team, adding 11 points and rebounding the ball much better. Ashlyn Overstreet scored five points and pulled down four rebounds. Carmen Mahaffey scored four points and Danique Davis managed seven rebounds for the team. Annie Rayburn and Selah Spaulding both scored two points a piece and rebounded well.

Coach Charlotte Barnes said the team has made improvement, mainly on defense. Barnes went into this week telling the girls they needed to be more aggressive defensively, and they did what she asked.

The varsity boys came out strong against the Pirates. The Jackets were leading most of the game, and gave it away in the fourth quarter. The final score was 46-63 in favor of the Pirates.

Cord Neal led the Jackets with 11 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter, closely followed by Dane Barnes, who scored 10 points. Colten Martin scored seven points, Cade Parrish had six points, Seth Read had five points before fouling out in the fourth quarter, and J.D. Clarke added two free throws. Coach Cory Hines was disappointed with the outcome after leading most of the game, but he continues to see progress.

The varsity girls and boys will play in the Apple Springs Holiday Hoops Tournament this weekend. The Lady Jackets will take on Centerville on Thursday, December 1 at 10:30 a.m. At 3 p.m. on the same day, the boys will play the winner out of Hull-Daisetta and Brookland.

Tuesday, December 6, will be a great time to catch our basketball teams in action at home as the girls face Burkeville in their first district game starting at 6 p.m. After the girls game, the boys will take on Thomas Bryzbee.
